Las cubiertas de cocina pueden ser de muchos materiales. En todos los casos lo que se busca es superficies no porosas, resistentes a la temperatura, humedad, desgaste y de apariencia estética. Cada material tiene sus ventajas y desventajas respecto a los otros. En las siguientes notas iremos analizando cada uno de los materiales más comunes. Laminado Plástico (Formica).- Este material lo hay en una amplia variedad de diseños simulando maderas, granito, etc. En términos sencillos digamos que es papel plastificado sobre una base de aglomerado. No poroso; resistente a temperaturas moderadas y por tiempo no prolongado, resistente a la humedad pero no a ser empapado; aceptable resistencia al desgaste. Por su precio bajo es el más utilizado en la fabricación de cubiertas de cocinas domésticas. Hay diferentes fabricantes con diferentes calidades y precios. Su instalación es relativamente sencilla teniendo experiencia en carpintería y las herramientas apropiadas.
